The Living Wall at Promise Ridge overlooks the Appalachian Trail in the Poconos and is situated above McMichael’s Creek in Stroud Township.
You'll need a Pennsylvania-issued marriage license.
Here’s the story of how the Living Wall at Promise Ridge came to be and what it has become.
In 2014, I commissioned an 8X12 living wall, Matt and Steven who maintain the grounds on my property set about designing and building it over the winter. When spring was just around the corner, they brought all the pieces together and installed the frame for the Living Wall up at Promise Ridge.
They found an excellent tailor in town to sew the marine-grade canvas for the living wall pouches.
Then it was time to prepare the pouches for planting. I got these coconut fiber rolls, organic soil and eventually 12 exciting varieties of ferns from Stonewall Garden.
Elaine from Stonewall Garden, helped to source 100+ ferns for Promise Ridge.
When it was time to plant, my sister Nikki and sister-in-law Sue came over to help.
Just planted baby ferns at the start of May 2015.
I was honored to create a renewal ceremony for my friends Heather, Nathan and their two children, to celebrate their 20th Wedding Anniversary. This was the first ceremony performed at The Living Wall at Promise Ridge--just 3 weeks after planting.

Christian + Michael, Player 2 For Life

Christian walked down the aisle with her father while “Hallelujah” by Jeff Buckley played, it was the Sixth Anniversary of the start of her and Michael's relationship. Friends and family celebrated the start of Christian and Michael's wedded life together with a Filipino Catholic-inspired ceremony at the picturesque Woodloch Resort in the Pocono Mountains.

Love Story (an excerpt from their ceremony)

Christian and Michael met homecoming weekend at the start of their junior year at Wagner College. In those days, Christian belonged to the Alpha Sigma Alphas and Michael was a Theta Chi brother. This sorority and fraternity just so happen to partner for social gatherings. It was at one of these get-togethers--a tailgating party before the big homecoming game--where Christian first remembers exchanging stolen glances and silly grins with Michael.

Michael says that he and Christian and have told people for years that they met at this homecoming football game. “While true,” he confesses, “the story should probably have an asterisk. The asterisk means it was the first time Michael found the courage to speak to Christian in full, uninterrupted sentences.”

Students at a small private liberal arts school, Christian and Michael were absolutely aware of each other, way before this particular homecoming game. Michael shares that, he first noticed Christian back in freshman year, he would see her from time to time around campus, but never knew her name or got the courage to talk to her. He noticed that she always seemed to be wearing the same sweater when they crossed paths, so she became “the cute girl in the yellow hoodie”.

Christian wasn’t the only co-ed with a nickname, Michael had also acquired a handful of aliases and a reputation for being one of the handsomest guys on campus. So when “Clark Kent” was sending smiling eyes in Christian’s direction at the Homecoming game, all the giggling girls present would agree, that it was a big deal.

Michael says, he finally got his shining moment homecoming night, “I was selling grilled cheese sandwiches outside the dormitories when she walked up to my table. She was unbelievably stunning (she was not, for the record, wearing the yellow hoodie). Although Michael was not successful in getting Christian to purchase a sandwich, he was successful in mustering up enough courage to invite her to join him on the fraternity floor later that evening.

Christian could not have been more excited, but playing it cool, said, she “would try to make it”. After waiting an appropriate amount of time (about thirty minutes) she ventured up to the Theta Chi floor and started looking for Michael.

As Christian meandered through the halls, her eyes searched for Michael’s room. One door she came across had two “Mikes” written on the door. She figured this was probably the best, most logical starting point… she knocked on the door, and she says, “her inner nerd came out.” There in the doorway, was THE particular Michael she was looking for, with an Xbox controller in his hand.

Michael invited Christian in to join him and his friend Eric. When she found out that she had just walked in on a very competitive match of Halo, (in slayer mode) she innocently asked if she could play? The guys handed her a controller and said, “she could try”.

An undercover gamer, Christian had become well-versed in Halo by her two older brothers, but decided to have a little fun by letting the guys think she was a noob. She says, it was “amusing listening to them give me tips and explain things”, but after a few minutes of this charade, Christian was done pretending.

By all accounts, they hit it off wonderfully, while Christian destroyed Eric and Michael in Halo. An excellent sport, Michael remembers, “she looked beautiful doing so.” About a month after that night, Michael gathered up all his courage again, this time to ask Christian out on a date.

Both Michael and Christian began to realize that their feelings for each other were quickly deepening. It wasn’t long before their hearts were about to burst and they needed to tell each other what it was that they felt. Michael decided that New Year’s Day was the perfect occasion to tell Christian how he felt. He drove to her parent’s house and surprised Christian by showing up on her doorstep. On the day after her 21st birthday, he told her that he had something to tell her. “Now” Christian says, “we continue to say ‘I love you’ and remind each other daily.”

Lasso of Love
To symbolize the everlasting nature of their new union, Michael and Christian wanted to incorporate the Lasso ritual (also known as the Lazo) into their wedding ceremony. They commissioned a beautiful floral lasso by Fox Hill Farms, and gave their mothers Carol and Nancy the honor of placing it over their shoulders in the ceremony. The Lasso is a reminder that a couple must equally shoulder the responsibilities that marriage brings, and it is also a symbol of the eternal nature of the commitment of marriage--it is place over the shoulders and twisted once in the middle to form the sign for infinity.
"Christian, the man whose hands you hold loves you very much. He’s determined and gentle, affectionate and compassionate, he’s confident enough to be vulnerable with you—he’s your rock. These are the hands that hold onto yours and squeeze a syncopated code to let you know he loves you, and the fingers that gently sweep your hair behind your ear."--Alisa Tongg, Celebrant
Arras, 13 Coins
In a tribute to Christian’s heritage, Michael and Christian also included the Arras ceremony ritual. Arras, or 13 coins ceremony, is a Spanish wedding tradition common in the Philippines. Earlier in the day, Michael presented Christian with 13 coins to demonstrate his promise to take care of her. The coins represent each month of the year, plus one for the less fortunate. Christian’s niece Riley carried the coins into the wedding.

The couple chose to expand on the tradition of 13 Coins, and identified thirteen values they wanted to share in their life moving forward. As I placed each coin into Michael's hands at the start of this ritual, I said aloud the attributes they had identified as important: Love, Kindness, Understanding, Trust, Patience, Laughter, Wisdom, Appreciation, Devotion, Joy, Acceptance, Generosity and Fulfillment. Then Michael and Christian clasped hands and exchanged them from one to another saying, “All that I have is yours and all that you have is mine.

Seven Steps Into The Sunset
And in the grandest style, they chose seven friends to each bestow a blessing upon them as they took their first steps together into married life. For the future, Michael says, “We want to grow really old together and be happy. Also, we’d like to be the best dancing old couple at our grandchildren’s weddings.”

These colorful moments were captured brilliantly by Danae and Marian of Kindred Souls Photography, especially considering they both were crying behind their lenses.

Hannah + Brian, More Than Anything

Two years ago, when I asked Hannah what she wanted her ceremony to communicate, she said, "I love Brian more than anything and want that to be reflected to our friends and family who will be attending our wedding."

In the end, their ceremony did just that. Brian's father played the guitar and sang as Hannah came up the aisle. They brought a rock from the Loyalsock Trail, where they had enjoyed many Sunday hikes when they were falling in love, and held on to it when making their vows to each other, setting their promises in stone. They had seven blessings bestowed upon them as they took their first steps into married life together, all while loved ones festively showered them with birdseed in the aisle.

Brian and Hannah live in Jackson Wyoming and just celebrated their first anniversary. Hannah sent me this message and it made my heart smile for them.

"Just wanted to let you know that my favorite part of Brian and my anniversary was reading the letters we wrote to each other a year ago while eating an ice cream cake with our pups! Thank you for helping us to start such a meaningful tradition! We even found birdseed when we opened our box!"

I hope Hannah and Brian leave the birdseed in their Anniversary Box so they can have another reminder of this particular moment in all their many years to come.

Happy Anniversary Brian and Hannah Ruth!

Carly + Branden, Family Ties

Branden and Carly were married this November at the ultra chic Vie in downtown Philadelphia. Family and friends traveled from across the country to witness the official start of Carly and Branden’s branch on the family tree. Although both the bride, groom and their families are Catholic, Carly and Branden wanted their ceremony and celebration to be in one central (and fabulous) location while also showing their guests “just how much love we have for each other”.

Since Carly and Branden’s families played such a central role in their love story, we wanted to incorporate and pay tribute to all of those special relationships throughout their wedding celebration too. On their wedding day, there was a thousand little (and some big) elements that communicated “I love you” to those closest to them. From the handmade programs (designed by Carly’s nieces), and the family handfasting in the ceremony to the family tarantalla at the end of the night, everyone present knew that their friendship was cherished by the couple.

Love Story

Carly and Branden met on a warm October night back in 2012, on the roof of Branden’s brownstone apartment building. At the beginning of the night, Carly remembers that she and Branden introduced themselves to each other, “and over the next few hours kept finding their way back” to each other through the crowd. Even though they had both felt a spark and “talked at length” throughout the night, when the evening was over, they both went their separate ways. Carly shares that “by Sunday afternoon, the nice guy from the roof hadn’t left my thoughts” so she reached out to a mutual friend for help. Monday night, she sent Branden a message, and within a few days, they were planning their first date—for that weekend. Their first date lasted eight “wonderful hours.”

Just a couple weeks later, during the Christmas season, Branden says he fell in love with Carly. But it was when he met her whole family at Easter a couple months later that he knew he wanted to be with Carly in a forever sort of way.

“Carly’s entire family has such an incredible way of making me feel welcomed and loved. Her family is generous, absolutely fun-loving and incredibly genuine.” Branden shares, “These are all the traits I had seen in Carly, but after seeing that the rest of her family shared these characteristics, I felt overcome with love and happiness.”

Carly realized too, that what she and Branden had was special, something that came around once in a lifetime if you were lucky. With Branden in her life, Carly remembers her dreams started changing--dreams that had once been vague and fuzzy suddenly came into clear focus and bright with color--it was Branden she saw in her visions for the future.

Last year, in February, Branden and Carly were at her parent’s house spending time with family. After finishing up dinner and celebrating a few birthdays, Branden enlisted the assistance of Carly’s nieces for a special surprise for Carly.
Carly's nieces drew love-themed covers for the wedding ceremony programs.

One at a time, they came up to Aunt Carly, tapped her on the shoulder and said, “I love you”. Then it was Branden’s turn, there in the kitchen, surrounded by her whole family, Branden tapped Carly on the shoulder, said “I love you too”, knelt down on one knee and presented her with the diamond ring that had been burning a hole in his pocket the whole night. He said that he “couldn’t wait one more minute to ask” if she would marry him. Surrounded by her family, she agreed that they should spend their lives together.

Passing the Sign of Peace. Thinking about what this particular moment was going to be like, Branden shares that, it will be an “amazing feeling seeing all of the people who have meant something special to me in the same room at the same time...for them to see the incredible joy I have when I am with Carly.”

Family Handfasting

To honor the important role that their family plays in their hearts and lives, Carly and Branden decided to put their own twist on the handfasting tradition. They invited four family members, each who embodied an attribute or value they considered most important for their own marriage, to participate in the handfasting. The attributes they identified were Friendship, Laughter, Adventure and Encouragement. Each admired family member placed a braided ribbon over the couple's clasped hands while saying aloud their blessing for the marriage.

"Carly: she’s vibrant and witty, curious and creative, generous with her affection and fully invested in her relationships. She has a magical way of leaving people better off than when she found them."--Alisa Tongg, Celebrant

"Carly and Branden, today, you can see that, again, you are not alone, as you are surrounded by all of these loved ones as you are about to embark together in this new relationship as husband and wife."--Alisa Tongg, Celebrant
